Those Magnificent Birds
In loving memory of Pepper, Peeper, Glinka, and Astor Pigeon

| Pigeons
are a rare species to have so much variation within the species. They
display magnificent patterns and often have iridescent purple and green
necks. They are spectacular in the air. They can clap loudly or
gently whistle as they fly. Their display flights are wonderful, as are
their aerial acrobatics.
Pigeons are smart and curious birds. They will get bored if kept in captivity, so it's important to give non-releasable pigeons some company and entertainment. (They enjoy HBO.) I probably know pigeon personalities more closely than most people since I literally shared a bedroom with them for years. I've watched them court, fall in love, build nests, mate, lay eggs, incubate, and hatch in my aviary. I have worked with the smallest of babies to keep them alive against the odds. They are so tiny and yet so much bigger than I am. My task becomes working through that precarious balance between neglect and interference to give these delicate creatures the best chance possible. Working with pigeons brings you closer to nature and gives you a great appreciation of the spectacular nature of birds and the magnificent feat of flight. I hope you will enjoy these beautiful birds as much as I do! return to Birds
