Duck Secrets of Town Lake

A few more duck secrets.

• The Colonel, also known as "Grandpa," is the man you've seen hanging out on Town Lake looking at the ducks.  He clued us in on an important duck secret, the Other Marvin.  Living behind Landry's Seafood Restaurant on Riverside is a Marvin look-alike named Marvette.  Marvette looks a lot like Marvin, unless you know Marvin very well.  Here are the differences:

MARVETTE GOOSE	Marvette, Not Marvin	MARVIN  GOOSE
goes squeak, squeak, squeak		goes HONK HONK HONK
has nice table manners and a polite smile		isn't Hyacinth Bucket's idea of perfect gentleman
respects the humans who feed her		bites the humans who feed him (fondly, of course)
curls her neck gracefully		sticks his neck straight out to attack

• Also behind Landry's lives a clan of five Muscovies.  Neither Genevieve nor Samuel mix with these guys.

• There are some nutria in Town Lake.   You'll see them swimming with their head just above the water (pictured right).  Yes, they do eat tortillas, and, yes, I fed them.
  
  
• There are numerous turtles, including some really, really big ones in Town Lake.
  
  
• Two baby swans were born in early May, 1999.

• Behind Landry's live several two other 'normal' geese as well as three geese who look like swan geese, but have orange beaks and are white and white 'n grey (pictured left).
